It is on a freshly updated system after having directories fixed with DiskWarrior and permissions repaired with Disk Utility.
I appears to be a permission problem on my main user account. Using another account worked without a hitch. I am not yet sure what it is but it is not related to Fink but to installing .pkg files at all.
