Hi,

I hope I'm posting in the correct mailing list, if not please tell me
which one would be better for my request.

I've noticed yesterday that the already available FAAC package from the
Fink project has been moved to the Sounds section now instead of the
wrong Graphics section, so thank you for that! This was one of the
issues I mailed about a month ago to the package maintainer Justin F.
Hallett aka TheSin, so I guess he has received my mail, but maybe didn't
have the time to answer. Or someone else from the Fink team saw my
replies in the Package Requests tracker on SourceForge.net (to Ben
Waggoner's questions) perhaps: http://sourceforge.net/tracker/
?group_id=17203&atid=371315&func=detail&aid=618857

Anyhow, at the moment the FAAC package only includes the decoder called
FAAD2. It is also a part of the general SourceForge project FAAC which
got his name from the encoder FAAC (Freeware Advanced Audio Coder,
LGPL). So the encoder is still missing in the Fink package, but would
probably be appreciated by the Mac OS X community that uses Fink
packages. As far as I know, FAAC v1.24 should compile flawlessly on this
OS, because there have been related fixes in the past to ensure this. If
not, you could always contact the developers in the faac-dev mailing
list or on the web forum at http://www.audiocoding.com/ which is the
homepage for FAAC and FAAD2.

The version numbering of the available FAAD2 decoder in Fink seems a
little bit strange to me, but this may be caused by the outdated FAAD
decoder (LGPL) that was deprecated a long time ago and replaced by FAAD2
(GPL). The release version of FAAD2 is 2.0 now, and the beta version is
2.1 and being constantly updated with the latest developments, e.g. HE
AAC and Parametric Stereo.

I mentioned some advantages of FAAC vs. Apple's AAC codec in the Package
Request tracker, but if you need more information about it to change the
Fink package information, you could have a look at the Wiki page on
Audiocoding.com or simply ask me, because I wrote that page (needs to be
updated to v1.24 soon):

http://www.audiocoding.com/wiki/index.php?page=FAAC

Thanks for providing so many open source projects for Mac OS X!

ZZee ya, Hans-Jürgen
