I succeed in installing this package from source for octave 2.1.53-1 (stable) but not for octave 2.1.57-2 (unstable).

I fixed this compile problem in CVS by using a diff from octave-forge cvs. It compiles now. I haven't tried to find out whether it works, though. There should probably be a dependency on a precise version of octave, also because of the place where octave-forge installs its files. Or maybe the octave-forge package needs to be named after a specific octave version. Or maybe it should in fact be treated as a splitoff of the octave package. Whatever.
This situation calls for some more pertinent measures:
I think it is not an acceptable situation to have fink-devel as a "maintainer" for such a specialized, non-trivial package. We need a procedure for these cases where packages are abandoned by their maintainers.
Maybe we should announce the fact that the package has been abandoned on the lists, and after some period of time, a couple of weeks at most, if nobody steps forward to take over maintainership, the package should be *scrapped*. Having no package is better than having one that does not compile or not work.
In the case of octave-forge, I put an advertisement into the PostInstScript. Since there seems to be some interest in the package, someone will perhaps adopt it (Note: I am *not* volunteering).
