After a moment of panic, I fixed it mounting the iBook as a FW device -- connected to another mac. Recreated the symlink, easy enough.
However, I find distressing that I was able to do this so... effortlessly.
This is not a fink bug... it is an apt/dpkg feature. However, i have in the past considered patching dpkg+apt so it will refuse to remove that symlink since it is so easy to screw yourself this way. Just haven't gotten around to it, feel free.. :)
