Yes, you're right, it should depend on tetex-base | system-tetex.
Therefore, I think that system-tetex should be installed *before* ec-fonts-mftraced, which can be achieved by making ec-fonts-mftraced depend on system-tetex. (or tetex-base).

I would say that it IS supported, in the sense that if I'm alerted to problems, I will try to work toward a solution. lilypond with native tetex is supported in the sense that I'm running that configuration myself, so I can generally do my own alerting.
