This is a good procedure, but it should be applied at a much later stage. Right now, we are going to add the new ncurses and gettext packages, which will coexist peacefully with the old ones. At some later date, we would like to remove the old ones. It's at the time of removal that we'll need to take great care with the upgrade, as you suggest.
