I see the message you refer to if I look at the .info file, but it wasn't obvious in the Terminal when I had my failure. It might have been scrolled off the top of the screen, as there were a large number of lines from dpkg complaining about things.
I bet most users won't scroll back looking for hidden messages from fink. Any message needs to be visible in Terminal when the install fails, or it probably won't get noticed.
