I often use my iBook as an X-terminal to run programs at work and have
them pop windows on the local machine. This is usually Emacs, but
also includes various plotting programs and acrobat.

Recently (maybe 6 months ago... the problem is intermittent, so I'm
not sure exactly when it started) I've had programs crash with
messages like "Bad Window Parameter" when I try to do this. I'm using
Apple's X11.app, OSX 10.3, and the "remote" system is Fedora Core 3.
Emacs (v21.3) crashes whenever it has to interact nontrivially with
the X server, ie, when highlighting text with the mouse. Acroread
won't even run, crashing with "bad window parameter" immediately.

There doesn't seem to be a new version of X11 from apple, but I've
tried the CVS version of emacs to no avail.

I've googled for this a bunch and haven't turned up anything, so at
this point I'm desperate. Is the problem:
1) Specific to me, so there's something funked up w/ my setup?
2) Specific to Apple's X11, in which case I should perhaps ditch it
and install the x.org version of X11 through Fink.
3) Specific to Fedora Core 3, in which case... I'm not sure what to
   do.

Thanks for any guidance. Please CC me directly with replies, as I
find it easier to keep track of things that way.

Greg
