This may be a stupid question, but when is it necessary, or is it, or is it even possible, to use static linked libraries in a fink package?
Not at all a stupid question – I was going to ask the same thing (in relation to the fontconfig2-dev packages). I understand that it forces libraries/executables to link against a specific version of a library (i.e. in the case of fontconfig2-dev) - is it possible to replicate this behaviour using dynamic libraries? What are the pros/cons/issues?
As Mike stated before, the new version of Pango (1.8.0) requires newer versions of fontconfig 2 and freetype 2 than is bundled with any version of the Mac OS provided X11.app (and possibly newer than what's included with the latest version of XFree86) - What are the blockers to creating packages using the freedesktop.org X libs? (Xrender, Render, FontConfig, et al) I'd seriously like to look at this now (or at least open up conversation) - I'm happy to maintain packages for these libraries (given that I need them) if we decide to go ahead...
thanks all,
Tony Arnold
