Hi folks (and Jeff):

I've been making heavy use of the g77 3.4.3-1 in unstable and have found it to work fine. In addition, unlike the stable version, it allows me to compile some software at full optimization, and the code runs about 90% as fast as when compiled with IBM's XLF compiler on my G5. So for what it is worth I suggest promotion to stable (mainly because having it available as a binary install is a significant advantage).

All the best,

Bill
