We need a spotlight plugin to index .deb files...the TOC at a min, maybe even grabbing full metadata from the config file...

With some fancy Perl <=> ObjC bridging, it should be possible to have Spotlight fully index .info files as well. I'm not sure whether Fink could also index the .info files as Spotlight indexes them, because things like sharing .info files between multiple Finks could get nasty.

I've written an info file mdimporter. It doesn't use fink or perl at all; the parser is pure Objective-C. It indexes a selection of metadata plus the full text content. I have a Smart Folder set to show all files in /sw/fink where kMDItemAuthors equals my name so I have easy access to the packages I maintain in all trees. Very nice. I'm releasing the code under the GPL, so feel free to use it as you wish.

I looked at doing an importer for deb files, but it's complicated because you need un-ar, un-gzip, AND un-tar (as far as I can tell) to get at the metadata. mdimporters need to be small and fast; all that overhead could be an issue. I didn't try it, so maybe it's not that bad--I'm just guessing.
