Sounds a lot like FAQ6.19 (or the one it references).
Unfortunately this doesn't answer Blake's earlier observation that fink
doesn't bootstrap any more due to
/sw/src/dpkg-bootstrap-1.10.21-201/dpkg-1.10.21/include/parsedump.h:33:

I am getting this now, too, and I don't know what has changed, I
recently bootstrapped without problem and others are still doing it. I
think it's the new gcc-4.0 build 5026 from Xcode-2.1. I am bouncing this
to fink-devel, because it's serious.
