Forwarding this to -devel so that someone can fix the news item (Alex?)
This should really be mentioned on the home page. You *need* to be logged in as an admin user in order to run the new Fink installer.

Right. Based on the permissions of /, the Installer can only work when
the user who is logged in is in the group "admin". By "logged in", I
mean to the Finder (there's no way to use su or sudo to alter the user
who effects the Installer).

Ah, OK, so this solves the mystery. This is also a bug IMHO. The installer should only do privileged things *after* it switches to admin mode by requiring the password. It should not require anyone to be logged in at the console as admin user (although most people do, otherwise this error would have been much more widespread).

Is there anyone reading this that has access to modify
http://fink.sf.net/index.html? It would be great if a note could be added to the note that's already there about repairing permissions that explains that you
have to be logged in in this way.

(I also hit this problem, and repairing permissions didn't help at all, but this fix did. But not all beginners will know enough to be able to find this message
that explains it).

Thanks!
