Yes, exactly. Fink is a distribution, not a testing system. There's
no reason that fink (lowercase, the package manager) can't be used
for testing, if that's useful to you, but in that case you should put
the .info/patch files in experimental or your own private distribution.
I agree with Max here (may as well make it a unanimous core position).
There are a few places where we do package beta-release or
release-candidate versions, "unofficially-patched" forms or even CVS
snapshots, but these are for packages where this version has critical
new features or bugfixes.
I do not agree at all. Fink has *always* had packages of unreleased and
beta software. The criterion was never "is it easy enough to build from
CVS", otherwise you could kick out hundreds of existing Fink packages
("Why do we have all those perl modules, they are easy enough to build
from CPAN", etc). The criterion was "does someone need it".
The difference between Fink and other packaging systems used to be (and
still is, I sincerely hope) that Fink was user-driven, not
ideology-driven. I find it somewhat disconcerting that participants of
this discussion who don't use fortran or don't even bother to look what
gcc packages exist in Fink right now are trying to impose a restrictive
policy. If there is a need for a package and someone creates a package
description for it, then it should have a right to be included in Fink,
as long as it does not perturb other packages.
