all i really need is the bare bones for gnome, which includes the window dressing that will match that of gnome which ships with fedora core linux 1. the problem is, i don't know which fink package to install ...
Maybe you could just install metacity ? It is the default gnome window manager. Don't know if it is the default on Fedora though.
