Daniel,
Do you have any idea why curl can't download the source files for
molmol from the European custom mirror? The US custom mirror no longer
exists but the European one does. However curl just hangs when it tries
to download. I can manually download the file from...

ftp://ftp.mol.biol.ethz.ch/software/MOLMOL/

using Firefox so the site does work.

There are ftp sites that don't work with passive mode (dunno why). You can test with

ftp ftp://ftp.mol.biol.ethz.ch/software/MOLMOL/unix-gzip

If you then say "dir", it says

229 Entering Extended Passive Mode (|||48131|)

and hangs. If you run "ftp -A" instead of simply "ftp", it works. As it says in "man ftp" for the "-A" flag:

It is only useful for connecting to very old
servers that do not implement passive mode properly.

Seems to be one of those. Similarly, for "fink fetch molmol",

curl -f -L -O ftp://ftp.mol.biol.ethz.ch/software/MOLMOL/unix-gzip/molmol-2k.2.0-src.tar.gz

hangs, but if you run "curl -f -L -P - -O ftp:...", it works. Thus, setting

ProxyPassiveFTP: false

in your /sw/etc/fink.conf solves the problem (unless your side is behind an unfriendly firewall, too, in which case you are out of luck).
