Bill,
I started a build of the gcc4 package last night on a G4 which I had
clean installed fink 0.8.1 and set it to the unstable branches. The
build isn't finished yet but it did get pass the compilation of
libgfortran.dylib so far without a hitch. I assume that both of your
G4's may have fink 10.4 installed as upgrades from 10.4-transitional,
correct? If so, why do you try a clean install of fink 0.8.1 onto
one of the G4s and retry the build of the gcc4 package.

ps I concluded a long time ago that upgrading from one major release
of fink to another wasn't worth the trouble. A clean install will
actually save you time in the long run.
