In preparation for moving some of my stuff to stable, I just
installed (on intel) the fink package (having moved aside my /sw).

I've issued fink-selfupdate (rsync)

fink scanpackages

fink update-all

and this is what I am (and presumably a new user is) greeted with:

% fink update-all
Information about 2066 packages read in 0 seconds.
The following 4 packages will be installed or updated:
gettext gettext-dev gettext-tools ncurses-shlibs
The following additional package will be installed:
libgettextpo2-shlibs

Could not resolve inconsistent dependencies!

Fink isn't sure how to install the above packages safely. You may be
able to fix things by running:

   fink scanpackages
   apt-get update
   apt-get install gettext-dev=0.10.40-25 gettext=0.10.40-25

Failed: Fink::SysState: Could not resolve inconsistent dependencies

I then issued

sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

and that fixes it, but if I put myself in the shoes of a newbie, who
might not even know to prefix the above suggestion with sudo, I can
see why people find this daunting.
