I followed Jack's suggestion, moving /sw out of the way, making a new one, with unstable activated, and tried to compile gcc42 so that I could move the deb files back into my original /sw
Unfortunately, the nightmare persists: dpkg-deb: building package `gcc42' in `/sw/fink/10.4/unstable/main/ binary-darwin-i386/languages/gcc42_4.1.9999-20070124_darwin-i386.deb'. tar: ./sw/lib/gcc4.2/include/c++/4.2.0/i686-apple-darwin8/bits/stdc+ +.h.gch/O0g.gch: file changed as we read it tar: ./sw/lib/gcc4.2/include/c++/4.2.0/i686-apple-darwin8/x86_64/bits/ stdc++.h.gch/O0g.gch: file changed as we read it tar: ./sw/lib/gcc4.2/include/c++/4.2.0/i686-apple-darwin8/x86_64/bits/ stdc++.h.gch/O2g.gch: file changed as we read it /sw/bin/dpkg-deb: subprocess tar -cf returned error exit status 1 Removing runtime build-lock...
