Does anyone know why a user would be having
problems using fink commander to install the
current gcc42 package in fink 10.4 stable?
The user already has the current gcc4 installed
(it reports as OBSOLETE so I believe it is
current). However when he tries to install
gcc42, fink commander can only manage to install
gcc42-shlibs.

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

Sorry, but the following packages have unmet dependencies:
  gcc42: Depends: gcc42-shlibs (>= 0:4.1.9999-20070124) but
4.1.9999-20070124 is to be installed
