In case anyone is interested, one out of the two open Radar bugs
in the iPhone SDK's linker is fixed in the new beta 2 release. The
linker now properly ignores duplicate symbols from static libraries
so that cc1plus-dummy in gcc can link without errors. However the
linker still can't link libgcj.9.dylib without forcing the 10.4 SDK
(using -isysroot /Developer/SDKs/MacOSX10.4u.sdk on the compile lines).
