Kenneth, What do you get if you build gcc44 with make -j 8? Does that hang as well? Remember that when you do -j 16 on a dual quad Xeon that the extra 8 'processors' are done via hyperthreading instead of actual cores. Building gcc is pretty stressful on the system and if Apple or Intel has any bugs in the hyperthreading support, I wouldn't be surprised to see those tickled by a gcc build although I must admit that the fact that you had bad ram makes me wonder if there still isn't some more bad ram left in the machine. If you have AppleCare, I would download the free TechTool Deluxe and run their ram tests. Alternatively you might be able to boot the x86_64 Fedora 11 installation DVD and run memtest off of it. Jack
