Martin,
   That is my point...at least for 10.6. Because of the Xquartz issue
and the absence of a binary installer for fink on x86_64 fink, we have
a window of opportunity to rid ourselves of .la files on x86_64 if
we want to take it. The longer the wait the more complaints we will
get from users when we implement it.
