The first example coming to my mind: if you look into atlas.info, you see (currently commented out) lines where linking was done with ld, precisely in part to avoid linking in libgcc_s (which in fact didn't provide any needed symbols in that case). And with -dead_strip_dylibs, this might become more frequent. But sure it will remain rather exceptional cases.
