Unfortunately, Fink's samba hasn't had a declared maintainer for 6 years, which is why it's so old, and apparently most people must be content enough to use the OS provided one. Fink would of course welcome an upgraded samba in the distribution. There was a similar inquiry about upgrading samba back in September 2010, with the emailer suggesting he would try to upgrade it, but no response ever came of that.
