I actually couldn't figure out the libtool version. I typed libtool --version, and that just creates an error, so I thought is was significantly older than 2.2.4.
So maybe that's the problem: there is a /usr/bin/libtool AND /usr/bin/glibtool And I think all these scripts will use /usr/bin/libtool, not /usr/bin/glibtool, thus we are installing all these other fink packages to work around that again, instead of simply forcing glibtool. But I may be speculating here. I also tried several combinations of fink libtool and autoconf packages (I had not started with automake yet). So thanks for leading me to the right combo.
