Hanspeter, As best as I can make out, the debian dh_*py* utilities (https://bookie.io/bmark/readable/4663588a313e74) are creating a sort of a local 'chroot' in tmp/debian which is used by setup.py with the --root option. Since we don't have the ability in fink to synthesize a local root directory for the python builds, if we want to allow the current wxpython packages to co-exist, we will have to live with placing the wx.pth in the *-dev split-off and avoid keeping those *-dev split-offs installed outside of builds.
