Max and all, Gee, I thought I covered the version details with "latest versions of all software." By that, I meant that I updated Fink and all packages today (which makes it Fink 0.9.7-1, Gnome core 1.4.0.4-12). I also mean that I have the current OSX 10.1.2 and the latest version of the Developer Tools.
Here's a bit more detail on the crash behavior. It does not seem to matter whether I run it rootless or in its own screen. Gmc crashes with a crash notification window (Application "gmc" (process 12956) has crashed due to a fatal error (segmentation fault)) immediately on starting the app and repeatedly flashes up the same crash notification window until I logout of Gnome. Subsequent windows have different process numbers; the second one on the current try was 12981. The third was 12986. Fourth was 12991. Fifth was 12996. These appeared at approximately 30-second intervals. Tasklist fails sometime after starting Gnome with a crash notification window like the one for gmc. The time to failure varies widely, and I occasionally get through an entire session with it running OK. After quitting and restarting XDarwin with Gnome, it sometimes runs VERY slowly (2-3 seconds to pop up a window, for example) if the Tasklist applet is installed in the Panel. I don't know if this is related to the previous failure of gmc. It seems to be improved somewhat if I remove Tasklist from the Panel. Icewm runs reliably but will not start any theme except Infadel2 or Nice through its script at /sw/lib/X11/icewm/. Icewm will start the others (I prefer metal2) and run them perfectly once X is running if I select one from the pop-up menu. The problems have persisted since about October, when I first reported them to the list. None of these package problems is a big deal, they're only annoyances. Hope this helps. Thanks very much for your efforts. -- Tom *** Home page at toad.net/~tdove/ *** * Sailing, genealogy, ham radio * _______________________________________________ Fink-users mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/fink-users
