(In my case, I manually added the packages I wanted from the unstable tree to my local tree, instead of enabling the entire thing. All upon the advice of the very helpful David Morrison.) > In this case, you don't need to because the updated package > descriptions are in the stable tree. fink selfupdate and fink update-all did *not* solve the problem I was having with grace. Nor did fink selfupdate-cvs fink update-all. What should I have done in addition? I didn't stop getting the lesstif error 'till Martin told me to get stuff from the unstable tree. > we know the documentation could be better, but <insert standard > disclaimer about us being volunteers with limited time, day jobs etc>. Hey, believe me I understand. I have a few such projects myself, and know the feeling all too well. What I've found is that issues such as documentation, so important to new and confused users, tend to *stay* on the back burner unless annoying people like me stick a fork in once in a while. Consider me nothing more than a grain of sand {.} I've been watching this and the fink-beginners list for a couple of weeks now. Seems to me that a significant portion of the traffic could be dealt with if someone who knew what they were doing -- which currently excludes me -- would write a step-by-step "what to do if it don't work" section for the FAQ, beginning with selfupdate, dselect vs. apt-get or fink install, self-update-cvs, copying from the unstable tree, bug the lists, inform the maintainer, etc.. Some of that's in the current docs, but not all that organized and not all of it. The time spent on it would rapidly be rewarded by dispensing with many replies to these lists with "do all the stuff in section so-and-so of the FAQ, then come back and bug us if none of that works." > We would appreciate any and all help with the documentation! I'm amenable to helping, but am at present wholly unqualified to be offering advice to anyone on anything to do with fink {:-)]. Right now, I'm just trying to explain what would have helped get me off the ground, to the extent that I am. Once I've learned my way around a bit better, things may change.
