Yes, some things just take a *loooong* time. In order to speed things up a bit, and maybe avoid destabilizing the build process, I've gotten in the habit of doing potentially big fink install/builds while logged in under the >console account. I figure just not having the window server running ought to help a bit, though I've never really tested that hypothesis.
