Here's another suggestion along the lines of cli switchs.  This combines my two 
requests into one:

fink list -b: for latest binary
fink list -s: for latest stable
fink list -u: for latest unstable

The first would imply running dselect or apt-get where as the latter two would 
imply having to do some compiling.

well since I'm adding a function to determin a pkgs tree it wouldn't be
hard but let me work this out first and see what Max thinks of it first.
