Comments like this come up a lot. I personally have gotten into the habit
of piping all fink activity through 'tee' so that I have a logfile in case
I need it later. It seems like a lot of people are doing hacks like this. 

Would it make sense for Fink to have a logging flag of some kind? Maybe in
fink.conf there could be parameters to [a] enable or disable logging, and
[b] set a default logging directory. I propose /sw/var/log/fink, with
individual log runs being timestamped &/or indicating the action[s] being
executed, as /sw/var/log/fink/install_2002.04.03.10:31:29 etc. 

Having the mechanism to gather a log like this automatically could be a
great tool for diagnosing problems for people on the Fink lists...
