After I got a new computer and reinstalled fink, it still happened. It took a rebuild of gdk-pixbuf and gdk-pixbuf-shlibs to fix it. the problem was /sw/lib/gdk-pixbuf/loaders/libpixbufloader-png.so and it's links were missing. I think this is a known problem where they are not installed correctly if they are not already there, or something. if you do startx -- -quartz, then all error messages will be routed to that termnial window and you can see what is going wrong.
