I've found a (bizarre) solution to the problem of esd not working.
If I unset the DISPLAY variable before invoking esdplay, then 
it works!

So, I now have a wrapped version of esdplay, which records the
display, unsets it, invokes esdplay, and sets again the display.

What could be the reason for this?
