Hmm, just tested it again -- my 667 MHz Tibook needs 26 CPU seconds to read a 25 MB file (uncompressed size) using jka-compr (just the emacs, not the gzip, which uses much less). Reading a random 15 MB file directly takes 4 CPU seconds (which is still much, but not as much). These numbers are valid for 21.2-3 and 21.2-4 (to which I just upgraded, just in case).
