Stuck in France on an experiment that was going nowhere, I decided to install Nethack. Surprised at the number of additional files required but went ahead anyway. Nethack seemed to run Ok, if you click the wee person moves, but ? gives nothing. On coming out whatever I type seems to be remapped. Oh well restart and fix it. But I can't login since the remapping is applied to the password. Get worried , shout a lot then shutdown and restart and all is well. Serves me right for attempting to Nethack on an experiment you may be thinking. However any ideas on why I can't type anything in Nethack and also on the remapping problem. Its not reproducible, it must be related to some combination of keys I tried in Nethack, since being an experimentalist I did try again after the scare.
