Sorry if this question has been discussed, I couldn't find anything in the archives. I'm also not totally sure if the fink-users list is the right place for this, but I thought I'd give it a shot. Any help would be much appreciated!
I'm having trouble with XDarwin in rootless mode when using it with a window manager that implements multiple virtual desktops, such as dtwm (which is part of cde) or xfce. XDarwin quits every now and then. It seems to happen when I switch desktops in xfce/dtwm AND I'm running some other memory-hogging OS X app such as Word or Excel. This behavior occurs when I'm running XDarwin + xfce locally, and when I'm running XDarwin locally and dtwm remote from my solaris 7 box. XDarwin does NOT crash in rooted mode with either local xfce or remote dtwm. The version of XDarwin I installed is XFree86 4.2.0-XDarwin1.1 from the dmg package from http://www.osxgnu.org/software/Xwin/xfree86/ (via pointers from the Apple downloads site). So my first question is: (1) Has anyone else had a crash problem with rootless XDarwin and either xfce or dtwm? I have subsequently installed a number of emacsen from source using fink (Package manager version: 0.9.12; Distribution version: 0.4.0.cvs). These installations placed a system-xfree86 placeholder in my fink distribution because I already had X11 through the osxgnu dmg package, if I understand correctly. But given the XDarwin crashes, I thought maybe there was something wrong with the dmg version I used, so I tried fink install xfree86-rootless today. But it fails with the following errors: ------------ sudo /sw/bin/fink install xfree86-rootless Password: Information about 564 packages read in 4 seconds. The following additional package will be installed: xfree86-base Do you want to continue? [Y/n] y dpkg -i /sw/fink/dists/stable/main/binary-darwin-powerpc/x11-system/xfree86-base_4.2.0-4_darwin-powerpc.deb dpkg: regarding .../xfree86-base_4.2.0-4_darwin-powerpc.deb containing xfree86-base: system-xfree86 conflicts with x11 xfree86-base provides x11 and is to be installed. dpkg: error processing /sw/fink/dists/stable/main/binary-darwin-powerpc/x11-system/xfree86-base_4.2.0-4_darwin-powerpc.deb (--install): conflicting packages - not installing xfree86-base Errors were encountered while processing: /sw/fink/dists/stable/main/binary-darwin-powerpc/x11-system/xfree86-base_4.2.0-4_darwin-powerpc.deb ### dpkg failed, exit code 1 Failed: can't install package xfree86-base-4.2.0-4 --------------- My second question is: (2) Does it make any sense for me to be trying to install XDarwin via fink when I already have the binaries via osxgnu? I have looked at the Fink X11 documentation, but I'm still not totally clear about how these distributions differ from each other. If so, then (3): what am I doing wrong in trying to install xfree86-rootless via fink? I'd be very grateful for any help. Rooted XDarwin is very good, but rootless XDarwin with virtual desktops (xfce or dtwm) is amazing, if I could get it to not crash!
