One data point for you.
I installed this "pre alpha" OpenOffice for Mac OS X
a few days ago.  Yes, it does require XDarwin, as no
Aqua version is yet available.  They apparently are
in need of developers to move this project along faster.
I had a couple of snags in getting it running, but
searching through their web site got me through to
successfully being able to run it.  It is definitely
pre-alpha.  No underestimation going on here at all.
It is very unstable, but it is nevertheless encouraging
that it does indeed run.
