Is that really the command you issued? When you see that 
[option1|option2|option3] syntax in documentation, it's supposed to get 
you to pick one of the options, not literally paste that string in. :) 
As a test I tried duplicating that & just got a complaint about commands 
not found and misuse of the 'apropos' command. Fitting, really :)

In any case, your problem is bigger than that...

That's just weird. It's as if your package descriptions are corrupted 
somehow.

Can you do a cvs update to clean up your Fink catalog?

   % fink selfupdate-cvs

I have a hunch that might resolve the problem, but it won't help explain 
it. I don't know how a catalog could get messed up that way...
