Actually, I just did the exact same thing recently. Just open your ~/Library/Preferences/org.xfree86.XDarwin.plist, and change the true/false entry after the "<key>ShowModePickWindow</key>" entry to "<true/>". -- Benjamin Reed a.k.a.
