I think you've hit a bug...

Part of the issue is, up until now, system-xfree86 was version 4.1, *not*
4.2. You could have 4.2 installed and it would still work, but there are
not-so-subtle differences between the two.

XFree86 4.2 includes OpenGL libraries, so mesa is not necessary anymore.
But, I can see that a problem happens if you were to do:

  1. install XDarwin 4.1
  2. install system-xfree86
  3. install mesa or system-libgl to get libgl
  4. install XDarwin 4.2
  5. upgrade to system-xfree86 4.2

When you do this, system-xfree86 provides libgl (which mesa or system-libgl
also provide), which will conflict. There are a number of bad things that
could happen. Either system-libgl and the new system-xfree86 get messed up,
and deadlock like you're getting, or you remove mesa and it deletes files
which are actually supposed to be part of system-xfree86 now (ie, libGL.dylib
or something similar) because it thinks nothing is supposed to own those
specific files anymore, which is very bad.

Does this sound like what's happening for you?

This didn't turn up initially after the new kde package release, because it
won't happen if you grab the binaries; apt can resolve these dependencies
and install the right files, depending on what you've got installed.

I'm not sure how to go about fixing this. In unstable, mesa was deprecated
(there was talk of removing it, dunno if that actually happened), and the
system-libgl bit is even more sticky.

Max Horn and David Morrison seem to have the most experience with package
dependency stuff like this... either of you guys have any input?

A preposition is something one should never end a sentence with.
