This is no bueno. When I launch gnome or play xmms the terminal reflects:

Yes, I'm sure my mac's sound is fine - in Aqua - and was working in Xfree before I 
updated esound.
I rebuilt gnome-core, xmms, audiofile and esound  all with the same result.
