Hi all,

I've got an original 233 MHz Bondi iMac, onto which I have installed
Darwin (just that, not Mac OS X) 1.4.1 from the CD image provided by
Apple. All in all it works pretty well, but I have had number of
difficulties installing fink, and I thought that perhaps someone on the
list had some advice for me, or had successfully gotten fink running
under Darwin 1.4.1. I've also gotten fink running successfully on
several other computers that were running 10.1.

Despite what I heard certain places, neither the GNU Darwin distribution
nor Apple's Darwin have curl installed (which is required by Fink).
Supposedly there is a Darwin Development Tools somewhere (at least, I
found mention of it on Apple's site), but I couldn't find it. I compiled
the most recent version of curl by hand, but when I tested it it failed
something like 7 of the tests, and didn't really work. Eventually, I
installed a curl 7.8 binary, and that seems to be working. But the real
problem is that some of the packages that the bootstrap.sh wants to
download (gettext-0.10.40.tar.gz, for instance) either can't be found or
can't be downloaded. This may still be a problem with curl, I'm not sure.

I noticed that once bootstrap.sh successfully downloads a tarball, it
doesn't need to try again if I re-run the script. However, I tried
installing the packages that wouldn't download by hand, and it still
tried to download them, failed, and gave up. I couldn't figure out where
I could edit the install script to bypass these downloads/installs (and
so that I could just do them manually).

So my questions are:

1) Has anyone gotten Fink running on Darwin?
2) Does anyone have any alternate suggestions on how to compile/install
fink?
3) Does anyone know which scripts I could modify to avoid trying to
download these resources?

Unfortunately, I don't have any output from the install script right
now... I'll email some later to this list if anyone wants to see it. I
was using the source from the Fink source release (18 April) that is
here:
http://fink.sourceforge.net/download/srcdist.php
If this source is out of date (it doesn't seem like it should be) then
let me know.

Thanks,

-- Erik
