I found the following entry in cups-1.1.14-1.info:

SetCFLAGS: -I/sw/include

After I changed /sw to the path where my fink installation is located (%p 
probably would have been better), I finally was able to compile cups. This 
is how it broke down before my change:

Compiling image-colorspace.c...
Compiling image-gif.c...
Compiling image-jpeg.c...

Failed: compiling cups-1.1.14-1 failed



Maybe this is old news for everybody, maybe it helps somebody else who hasn'
t got fink installed in /sw.

Now moving on to kde...
