The author of TexShop encourages users to use Gerben Wierda's distribution of teTeX. The dmg for teTex is rather hefty (~50 meg), so I would prefer to use the fink distribution of tetex rather than downloading and installing a new package.
Preliminary testing has shown that by setting both the tex and distiller paths to /sw/bin, as well as installing the fink package "pdftex", I'm able to use the fink versions of teTeX. (I don't know if pdflatex is required) I have three questions: 1) Am I likely to run into subtle bugs? 2) Does the Wierda distribution of teTeX differ any substantial manner from fink's package? 3) Is system-tetex written expressly to support the Wierda distribution? Or is there a "competing" distribution of teTeX for MacOS X? (If the answer to all three questions is yes, a new fink placeholder package may have to be developed.)
