'dpkg -L gzip' will show you the list of all files installed by a
package (gzip here).
'dpkg -S zcmp' (or 'dpkg -S /sw/bin/zcmp') will show you the package
that installed
the specified file.
Using those, you see immediately that if you reinstall bzip2 and ncftp
in addition to gzip, all your zero-length files will be repaired.
