About this db3 stuff: OK, I don't know how this is supposed to work for
the older gnome versions in stable, but at least for those I have been
building from unstable without problems recently, there is no need to
include db3 stuff.
The db185_open symbol is never referenced, but dlopen is instead. And
dlopen is in the libSystem library, so you don't need to do anything to
include it (there is even a -lm which includes it, but it wouldn't be
necessary AFAIK).
You don't have db3 stuff in /usr/local/{include,lib}, by any chance?
This could explain your problems, because it might get picked up
inadvertently at some point during compilation.

As I said, I don't know if this makes sense for 1.4.1.4-3, although I
doubt it. For the version 1.4.1.7-2 in unstable, it is definitely wrong.
