After a little more reflection, I'm almost certain that "patch" isn't the problem I'm running into with fink install. It's just the symptom, or the point at which things seriously break down.
I'm almost certain that the problem lies in fink un-tarring downloaded tar balls, and corrupting the file system somehow (perhaps writing out a 0 length file with no EOF, or something?). I just ran into the problem again this morning; that makes twice in a few days. In both cases, if the unpacking happens right after the tarball download (that is, curl dls the tarballs required, then fink unpacks them, and starts its required patching), patch chokes, and very quickly after that the entire system locks up. In both cases, I had to hard-reboot. I then went into /sw/src and removed the unpacked directories with rm -rf. Then I redid a 'fink install' and this time everything seems to be progressing normally. This strikes me as far too regular an occurence not to be a bug of some kind (i.e. I have my doubts that it's caused by a bad sector on my disk, or a problem in my file system): this is exactly the same behaviour I've suffered on five or six occasions when this has happened. Both before, and after, using Drive 10 to examine and repair any damange in my file system. In all the cases, after rebooting, removing the unpacked directories, fink install works fine. In the earlier cases, I discovered that if I attempted to poke about inside the unpacked trees in /sw/src, that cd and/or ls would very quickly lock up once getting past the level of /sw/src/somepackage-dir. Again, this leads me to suspect that fink is corrupting archives when unpacking them somehow. If there's any further bits of information people need to start looking at this problem in earnets, please ask and I'll attempt to provide them. This strikes me as a show-stopping bug, and one that needs to be squashed. (Of couse, I would say that, as it's happening to *me*, 8-)).
