While I am unable to reproduce this crash - at the corresponding place I get

./emacs -q -batch -f list-load-path-shadows
Wrong type argument: stringp, nil
make[1]: [emacs] Error 255 (ignored)

and the compilation continues successfully - I see that this version of 
emacs still has an old bug:

During compile time (!), and then again while installing the package, it 
creates some directories in /usr/local.
I consider this as not only annoying, but illegal for a fink package

I have /usr/local as a symlink to another place, and while testing the 
building of fink packages, I often remove this symlink. Now after 
building emacs21, I find myself with a /usr/local/share file hierarchy 
which I have to remove by hand before being able to put the symlink back.
