Is /sw a symlink to your true fink tree? And does /sw/etc/fink.conf 
contain the line

Basepath: /sw

(*not* the true path)?
Then, in principle, everything should work.

If it still doesn't, look whether this 'Applications' directory got 
correctly filled with an XDarwin.app folder.
